Today

There are so many reasons I love being a photographer. Today, it is because I feel like I'm growing professionally and have learned so much since starting my business a little over a year ago. I can stand behind my lens with confidence and assurance that I can get that shot. That shot, like this one, where I look back on it and feel a sense of pride and emotion in the face of the little girl I caught looking back and smiling. There is a lot to learn, there always will be. Most of it I have to learn on my own. This is both exciting and overwhelming at times, and days like today it is all worth it. I feel happy, both in my work and the future ahead. With every shoot I will push myself to get better and better in my profession. I am hungry to learn and become the absolute best photographer I can be, all the while understanding that there will always be something new to learn and master. Wedding season is beginning, and I am excited. Thrilled even. I stand behind my lens and get the honor of capturing those special moments that mean so much to so many. A lesson learned from every shot taken and edited. The joy of capturing memories and the smiles when they are received. Yep, today I love being a photographer.

Another world

I traveled to the incredible island of Zanzibar in 2007. This was long before I would have ever claimed to be a photographer and was traveling there as an anthropologist. The setting sun in that part of the world is some of the most beautiful I have even seen. Fisherman sail in from a day of catching fish and catch the rays of the setting sun in their sails. I found this picture I took with a point and shoot years ago and was once again reminded of the incredible serenity and beauty in that other world.
